A truly unique Australian is Mikey Perry, whose project Paces is the musical response to his everpositive attitude and focus on creating good vibe party tunes. Paces’ brand new single, ‘Call The 5-0’ featuring Midas.Gold, Tigerilla and Health Club, comes in like a hot breeze, a pacey funk-groove laced with that caffeinated positive Paces vibe and the next taste of Paces’ upcoming sophomore album, ZAG, to be released on August 24th this year. We caught up with him to talk music, travel and festivals.
What’s your name and what do you?
My name is Paces and I’m a music producer.
What kind of music do you play? What best describes your sound?
I make music that exists between the worlds of pop and club music. It’s fun and has a pop sensibility but it also makes sense at music festivals.
What would you say is your biggest influence?
Learning new things is my biggest influence! I try to be always educating myself on some aspect of music. Whatever new piece of theory or production techniques I’ve learned recently, that’s what gets me psyched in the studio.
Where’s the best club you’ve ever played?
Hmmm it’s hard to pick a favourite but probably this club night that happens in Sydney called The Wall.
And the best festival?
My favourite festival experience was playing Splendour In The Grass. I brought along Guy Sebastian and Tkay Maidza as my guest vocalists, I had my dancers and visuals there plus the most confetti I’ve ever seen in my life. It was just a huge party and I’ll never forget it.

Where’s the most unique festival you’ve been to and what was so special?
Secret Garden Festival. There’s just something so magical about it. Hard to pinpoint it but it’s such a different vibe from all the other music festivals I’ve been to. Magical is the only way to describe it.
What was the most difficult festival you ever went to and was it worth it?
Last month I was in LA working on some music. I was booked to play this festival called Lightning In A Bottle which is about 5hrs north of LA. I’d never driven in the States before (wrong side of the road for me) and I had the worst flu. I was in really bad shape but I had to get there. It was a super stressful day but completely worth it when I arrived!
Where’s your home town?
I live on the Gold Coast. Down the south end (not Surfers Paradise). It’s a quiet beach town with heaps of natural beauty and an amazing food scene.
What’s your favourite local bar/restaurant/bar/club?
There’s a Japanese restaurant named Etsu Izakaya which is incredible, and a Mexican restaurant named Bonita Bonita. Both are an absolute must if you’re visiting the Gold Coast.
Where’s your favourite clubbing destination?
Rattlesnake Motel in Coolangatta. Good vibes all the time 🙂
Is there something you can’t travel without?
I always make sure to have a few books on my phone and have a good podcast on hand. Really helps to break up the long days of travel.
What travel destination would you recommend our readers add to their bucket list?
If you’re into the outdoors, I’d recommend a 4WD camping adventure on Fraser Island. That place is a natural wonder and you can just camp right in the sand dunes. It’s paradise.
Where was the most surprising place you discovered a big music influence?
Saw something in Auckland once that blew my mind. I was still pretty new to the world of music and I was just walking around by myself there one night checking out different bars. I walked up this staircase that had no signage but I could hear music. When I got to the top there was a jazz band performing with two rappers. It was a combination I’d never seen before and it really opened my eyes to the fact that there doesn’t need to be clear boundaries in music.
Where can we see you play over the next few months?
I’m spending the next month travelling around Australia supporting Hot Dub Time Machine on his tour. Also I’ll be heading to New Zealand to play at Deep Hard N Funky festival.
Anything else you would like to add?
I have a new album dropping on August 24th called ZAG. I’m so excited to share it with the world! Check it out, I hope you’re feelin it! 🙂
